It looks like Saidit shutting down didn't just depend on a loss of motivation by Magnora7. If we believe Magnora7's explaination of the shutdown, he says he did not have access to the main server. D3rr was holding the keys. At some point it is likely one of the services on the server went down. Saidit was composed of multiple processes. But whatever was responsible for storing votes and comments wasn't working. Then the whole thing went dark.
In theory D3 had access to these backend services. Saidit had had interuptions in the 2.5 years that Magnora didn't have access, and had been restored. But for whatever reason D3 didn't feel motivated to fix this problem. What caused that lack of motivation? What made him lose motivation?
I've heard some speculate he was frustrated that he wasn't given enough access to fix Saidit's problems, like spam. But from the sounds of it he had all the access. He had the only access. The exception being maybe over the cloudflare.
So he was clearly motivated at one time. Motivated enough to take control of a site. But then later didn't have enough motivation fix spam, or ultimately to solve what killed saidit in late 2025. What could the community have done to keep him motivated?
I think d3 made several significant investments in the past 7+ years, related to work, personal life, Saidit &c. So d3's reasons for his involvement or lack thereof are perhaps multifaceted. A communication breakdown between him and m7 regarding the bans of individuals (not spam in those days) and a needed update to Saidit policy resulted in d3 feeling betrayed by m7 for not approving d3's suggestions (is my interpretation). As some of us think, Saidit's recent problem was a server protocol overload that had to be cleared or updated. M7 had an opportunity to contact d3 for help with this. M7 claims he contacted d3. D3 claims m7 did not. As I see it, m7 has had an opportunity to request d3's support, but did not adequately arrange it (as d3 can resolve the problem if he wants to). It's not clear to me what d3 wants, but I do think that m7 has had an opportunity to reach out to d3 diplomatically to attempt a recovery of Saidit, but (m7) has chosen not to make the appropriate form of request to d3. That said, I think both d3 and m7 don't want to spend the time necessary to revive Saidit at the moment. If in the future they want to do it, I think they can.
From the beginning we tried to get a goals, roadmap, etc. going. I started documenting everything on the wiki, including Saidit policy and FAQ, and some of that improved - but not enough and with very little enthusiasm from M7 that trickled to zero before long. Along with shit communication, M7 took D3 for granted fostering bitterness long before the ban issues, policy issues, and self-deletion and abandonment.
Internal politics that we'd never know.
They weren't so internal.
I'd say 99% of it was out there in chat and/or comments.
In theory M7 could have brought this up before the collapse and critical failure. 2.5 years sits odd in the timeline.
In fact M7 lied about some big things. Not a frequent habit, but many more than once a year, from a guy who eventually didn't post/comment much.
The worst I can say is that D3 got more and more bitter over the years and was not courageous on some fronts - yet to my knowledge he was not a liar. And has no reason to lie.
Even if we could have found out months or years before SaidIt's death, I'm not sure anyone could have convinced D3 to work for hours/days/weeks on SaidIt again, due to M7's mismanagement, miscommunications, and mistreatment. However, I do suspect D3 might have been able to tell us what may have been wrong, recommend actions, recommend admins, etc.
I was over SaidIt when I left it. I invested a lot in that dream.
Currently I'm more bummed D3 quit GoatMatrix because of some chat bugs or whatever.
Basically they argued over censorship, d3 wanted to delete mean posts and ban people. Magnora correctly said no as that would then be the same as Reddit. D3s friend Carswell started attacking magnora with personal insults and trolling. I think that made magnora lose interest but he should have thicker skin if running a website. The thing about d3 having a password doesn't make sense tho cuz these days you can just reset your password, like if you know security questions or your birthday etc. Magnora might have just Wanted to blame it on d3 as one last fuck you. Just goes to show, typical humans being immature and causing drama.
Why do you keep lying?
I don't need to resort to insults when M7's own words and lies, actions and inaction, and history is more than enough to incriminate himself. The abundance of evidence proves magnora7 was a shitty site manager with a huge ego refusing to hear folks trying to help. I'm too busy trying to improve things with no interest in trolling.
Prove me wrong.
