I think the main story behind Venezuela is that a while after Chavez took power and nationalized a bunch of stuff, he started re-opening the oil industry to foreign investment. American corporations jumped in, pouring billions into infrastructure. But at some point after that, the relationship soured (you'll need to read into the narratives to sort it out) and they decided to unilaterally re-nationalize the infrastructure the foreign corps had built. Venezuela offered to pay back the cash that was invested, but the corporations would be cut out of future profits (which were projected to be in the 100s of billions, if not trillions.)
Then Venezuela started selling oil to Cuba, China, Iran, etc. using this infrastructure. In any case, this is one of those things that big oil corporations and the CIA really don't like, and will come at you with everything.
