If I was mic'ing up a car to give the driver some noise, I'd mic multiple locations. The nice thing about sound is it can layer on top of itself. Then people can develop intuition for what they are hearing. Mic the wheels, mic the suspension, mic the power cables coming out of the battery. Especially anything that can break that will sound slightly different when broken. If the idea is trying to create that same experience of being able to hear what's going on with a car, we might as well make it enhanced rather than reduced.
