There were a lot of shots of the characters just looking around.

Ah. They are already falling into the Walking Dead syndrome. Stranger Things is definately there. The Walking Dead syndrome is when the directors feel like their characters have become so iconic that simply showing them on camera qualifies as entertainment or a deep moment. Eventually these few pointless shots become most of the show and every scene either starts or stops with the camera just hanging on them poinlessly. It starts with three extra seconds and then progressively becomes 10-15 extra seconds.

Specifically with the Walking Dead a lot of the shot were taken with an upward angle, so the last season is just a rotation of looking up different character's nostrils, and no action.
