I wonder if Americans would laugh if Iran sent drones to destroy our oil refineries?

[-]pumpkin5(+4|0)

Many Americans would laugh, because they know attacks in the Middle East are for Israel, not for Americans, and that those countries should attack the US. If you remember 9/11, the first reaction for many was that the US brought this on themselves, even if we feel sorry for those who lost their lives. Because of Israel's control over US politics and international war crimes since the 1960s, the US has been a legitimate military target for the many countries it's attacked. In every empire throughout history (including US, Russia, China, England, &c), many of its citizens would laugh that it's being attacked by the people the empire has attacked and oppressed, while many others would be upset that their dear empire was being attacked by anyone. We should know who we are, what we've done, and why we deserve reactions to our past sins.

My sentiments then and now.

Americans should rise up and overthrow the banksters, CIA, thinktanks, etc. or forever suffer as debt slaves like the rest of the world suffers.

Firearms and Semi-Automatic weapons against bombers and tanks? The military would wipe them out.

This video evokes a complex range of emotions for me, but "funny" is not among them :)

First of all objectively this is an attack on civilian infrastructure (Moscow refinery probably), imagine being an ordinary refinery worker who is as far from front-line as anybody else (fortunately nobody died in this exact attack if I'm not mistaken). Maybe this campaign will pressure Putin into some useful for Ukraine decisions, but what we can be sure it will definitely result in is fuel shortages and food price hikes for ordinary people.

As for "laugh hysterically" the laughter didn't seem natural to me, more like nervous laughter or maybe stoned laughter triggered by the surreality of this :) And honestly I don't understand people having fun over that like "they laugh over their economy destroyed", would you prefer a hatred instead like "we will revenge for this"? It's okay that they don't feel connection to a refinery which is owned by some billionaire or 50% owned by state.

Thanks for offering your perspective on this. It's very difficult to know how the invasion is interpreted because the news media on all sides is so biased.

I agree that there is nervous laughter, and a sign of it is the comment, "I don't want to work today." It's indeed a depressing situation to see local structures burst into flames, and one would naturally worry about potential civilian deaths and injuries. Perhaps the timing of the attacks should have been much earlier in the morning, to minimise civilian casualties. Ukraine has focused on attacking oil infrastructure and military sites, as these attacks reduce military options for the Kremlin (and the Kremlin has hit numerous civilian targets over the years).

I think oil refinery and tank destruction is an important strategy, with minimal civilian damage, and it's much better than continuing to push meatbags into the front lines (on both sides, this war of attrition). Negotiations have also not worked because the Kremlin will not accept a deal where they retreat from Ukraine. Ukraine cannot win a war of attrition at the front lines. And the Kremlin has the support of Iran, China, India, (Trump's admin) and others, which keeps them in Ukraine. But that support is weakened if the Russian oil supply taps are turned off.

Imagine how much smaller this war would have been if neither side used drafts. Making drafts a war crime would at least help a little. It makes sense, because you are dragging otherwise dis-involved civilians into your violence. Not much different than some other descriptions of war crimes, like bombing civilians.

If no drafts were involved both sides would run out of steam quicker. You would get to whatever end conclusion will come, but arrive there with less destruction.
