Jonathan Kiril Thomas Menkos Zeissig is an economist and has held the position of finance minister since January 19, 2024.

Before arriving at the Executive Agency, Menkos devoted more than two decades to the study of fiscal policy, the public budget and human rights development.

Today, he replaces the outgoing president of the Banguat, Álvaro González Ricci, who held the position since 2023 and who was appointed by the then president, Alejandro Giammattei.

Menkos’ political participation began in 2019, when he was invited by the Seed Movement and then-presidential candidate Thelma Aldana to integrate the presidential binomial as a candidate for the Vice Presidency and coordinate the government plan for the period 2020-2024. That binomial ultimately did not participate in the election.

He is an economist at the University of San Carlos de Guatemala (USAC) and has a master’s degree in Government and Public Policies in Latin America from the Pompeu Fabra/IDEC University of Barcelona, in addition to a postgraduate degree in Quantitative Methods taught by the Bank of Guatemala and the Rafael Landívar University, and another in Finance from the University of Valparaiso, Chile.

His career began at the Bank of Guatemala, where he worked between September 2000 and January 2006 in the departments of Statistics and Economic Studies.

He subsequently joined the Central American Institute of Fiscal Studies (Icefi), where he coordinated the areas of research on Public Budgets and Human Rights and Economic and Fiscal Conjuncture, until assuming executive direction in 2012.

He remained in charge of the institute for a decade, until November 2022.
