Yeah. Sounds great. I might just go with the first one but I also though about setting up a poll and let people decide. That might be over doing it for something that small, but I want to involve the site more in decision making. I'm still deciding how I want to add it to the UI because people need to be able to turn it off. I have three options. One is to put it in a check box under the chat. Another is in the settings page. Another is I could add a menu to the chat in its top right that could have options. I'm tempted to just do the check box thing, just to get something in sooner than later. Then also there is deciding if it is default on or off. Now this is a possible good use of a poll.
As I was reading your post, I was drawn to the checkbox option, because a user can indiscriminately turn it on and off, like a mute feature, if they want to, without having to go digging for it. Also, real estate is a premium around the chatbox area. If you do the checkbox option, would it be worth it to have the checkbox default to the "ON" state upon log in? I can search for specific sounds within that link if you'd like me to, I didn't mean to just dump that on you. I just need to know what actions you need sounds for.
It is the easiest one to implement. I think within the first one or two there was a good sound. But I guess isolating the good ones might be good for giving people some reasonable options in settings. Some of them a full ringtone length.
