Edit: Nominations done. Thank you! Now vote!.

It looks like Space won the theme poll. 2nd place was triple features. We are going to recycle that poll into the future so there is a good chance of that winning sometime soon.

I want to make a poll for space movies. I could make my own list and set up a poll asap but I also want to get other people's suggestions. And I want them to have an equal shot with my own ideas so I want to delay starting a poll instead of doing late adds.

So what are your top space movies? For me the first movies I think of are non-fiction. The Right Stuff and Apollo 11. But sci-fi is probably the other main category of space films. I'm also adding Gravity to my own contribution.

If we are fast I can get a poll up and maybe we can even have a movie ready by Saturday. I think Saturday 8pm east has become the most recent default. In chat as always.

LOL "non"-fiction.

I think it's important to separate hard-sci-fi from sci-fi-fantasy, aka space opera (magic, monsters, gravity in space, etc).

Hard-Sci-Fi In Space

  • 2001 - classic, seen to death
  • 2010 - good, book was better
  • Ad Astra - long slow Brad Pitt, pretty but boring
  • Apollo 13 - classic, seen to death
  • Arrival - great, seen a lot
  • Contact - great, seen a lot
  • Elysium - great, seen a lot
  • Europa Report - great
  • Gravity - great, seen a lot
  • Interstellar - good, seen a lot
  • Moon - fucking great!
  • The Martian - great, seen a lot
  • The Right Stuff - classic
  • Wall-E - classic

That's off the top of my head. There aren't a whole lot, much less that are good, and if they existed I should have seen them already.

I'm working on a cautionary movie I hope to make with AI one day. Was talking with Emma about it yesterday. She's going to help refine the subtext. IMO my Bittersweet Seeds story is on par as important as LeverMind / Santa Libertas to edutain the world. I have friends that worked on Contact and Gravity, and while brilliant and entertaining, those stories won't meaningfully change lives.

Sci-Fi-Fantasy / Space Operas In Space

Seen it all to death. Your lists have it covered, plus cerebral...

  • Passengers (2016)
  • Silent Running (1972)
  • Solaris (1972) - original Russian
  • Solaris (2002) - remake
  • Sunshine (2007)

Also

you could throw in some of the 70s animation stuff

  • heavy metal
  • star chaser

generally they're not very good, but they are a little uncommon and interesting in their style

also, muppets from space

Wish there was more. In general maybe 1/10 of everything is good. Books, music, movies, etc. 1/100 is great. 1/1000 is exceptional. If there were more animated space movies, then there's be a lot more crap - along with more good.

  • Fantastic Planet (1973)
  • Gandahar (1987)
  • Heavy Metal (1981)
  • Invader Zim*
  • NausicaƤ of the Valley of the Wind (1983)
  • The Mitchells vs. the Machines (2021)
  • Titan A.E. (2000)
  • Treasure Planet (2002)

*Writer on Invader Zim, Eric Trueheart, and I, shared an RV at Burning Man 1999.

Thanks bro. It makes sense. It's not like people get a very frequent excuse to watch Armageddon.

[-]iSnark3(+3|0)
  • Guardians of the Galaxy
  • Apollo 13
  • Space Cowboys
  • Star Trek (JJ Abrams)
  • Star Trek Into the Darkness

No Worries, How about using Red Dwarf as lead-ins to the movies...

[-]x0x72(+2|0)

Not a bad idea. We'd have to time it well because I don't want people to wait long past the announced time to start the movie. I guess as an example you could start doing Red Dwarf around 7pm (really you can do whatever you want). But I can't do a moment of announcement for that because I only have so much I can message different forums and I need to keep that for the movie. So you'd probably need to do a bit of your magic to gather a crowd for that.

It's my plan that we really are doing a movie this Saturday. If you want to get some Red Dwarf links uploaded to gvid ahead of time that will make it easier to do things.

There are a LOT of space shorts on YouTube and elsewhere, including from dedicated indie production companies and famous directors. They might be good as lead-ins or interludes.

[-]VantaFount1(+1|0)

I have all episodes of Red Dwarf, I'll give it a try.
EDIT: Tried three, but I get an error "No video with supported format and MIME type found"
Originals are in .avi format

I got those fixed. I typically don't re-encode uploads for cost savings and quality preservation. Maybe I should fix that or detect and warn before moving the data. But using a web available format is usually what to look for.

This theme may actually go into December. We'll run it however long we feel like running it.

Also I'm contributing to the list:

  • All starwars films
  • All startrek films
  • Galaxy Quest
  • Spaceballs

I like this obscure movie, sort of Event Horizon-like, but 7 years earlier:
