Crowdsourcing investigations was quite publicly denounced back during the Boston marathon bombing, but I think this is one of those things that's just going to improve over time. Especially if our institutions stay on the track of progressive enshittification.
Reddit was right about the Boston thing. That had a fake person as a hero too, they said a 26 year old Chinese engineer named Danny had been carjacked by the tsarnaev brothers. Danny escaped them and called 911. That person Danny never existed. That event involved MIT as well.
