Despite it's flaws, I really like Saidit and hope it comes back.

[-]Tom_Bombadil1(+2|-1)

Yep. I also hope M7 is doing ok.

It was a valiant effort. He has my respect.

If it's ruining his life, then he should let it go. Saidit (antiexteremes) outlasted the rest, and life is too short to waste it all on fighting shills and socks-slave-bots.

If M7 knows how to find me, then he should look me up. Just saying.

[-]JasonCarswell1(+1|0)

It had a good GUI and once had great potential, despite the egotistical owner mismanagement.

[-]Neol3(+3|0)

Weird: who.is says it expires on "1/13/2026"

https://who.is/whois/saidit.net

Which website says the truth??

UPD Ok, whois.domaintools.com also says "Expires on 2027-01-13 / Updated on 2026-01-02", looks like who.is is not to be trusted.

https://whois.domaintools.com/saidit.net

[-]x0x72(+2|0)

Yeah, I'd just trust the newest information.

[-]JasonCarswell1(+1|0)

Disappointed.

Disappointed magnora7 renewed it.

Disappointed anyone still cares about SaidIt. It's dead Jim.

Disappointed I even commented on it.

FM7.

Necrophilia + sunk cost fallacy.

[-]Neol2(+2|0)

So the new "Error 1000: DNS points to prohibited IP" on saidit.net also appeared on Jan 3, and x0x7's version was that domain was transferred to some other person.

I mean maybe it's not magnora7 already.

[-]x0x73(+3|0)

A lot of cloudfare's own forums suggest that error happens when cloudflare points to itself. Of course those forums are mostly composed of people running functional websites so their circumstances might be different.

Then I had a theory that a way cloudflare could end up pointing at itself is if someone registered the site freshly in cloudflare. When you add a new domain that has other DNS cloudflare will copy the public DNS record to your table of remappings. I suppose then if you add from cloudflare to Cloudflare that the public DNS will have a cloudflare IP address in it.

If someone picked it up but doesn't have a server set up yet, they may just be leaving the errant IP address in till they have something. This may indicate they are actually trying to run saidit rather than it going to a spam portal because a spam portal operator would have a server up already.

[-]JasonCarswell2(+2|0)

Maybe.

I trust "whoever" even less.

I'll give M7 credit for many things - but he fucked up in a lot of critical ways.

SaidIt can never be what it was (much less achieve its timely vast potential) - and even at the best of times it was never the rose garden you remember. It was, we were, never allowed to grow and thrive.

[-]LarrySwinger1(+2|-1)

That's true. I remember Musky being banned for toeing the line and someone being banned for creating a National Socialism sub which was equated to promoting violence while all the other forms of statism were allowed. And b3 (or bobbobbybob) being driven off. Yes, a lot of meddling from magnora7 even though the community was small.

[-]JasonCarswell1(+1|0)

LOL. I forgot about B3.

Yes many were banned - whether they deserved it or not. For the sake of the community, he should have set up a way to see how/why people were punished. I asked for this countless times. Whether it was UselessAether, DiogenesJunior, Horrux/Ultrix/Alphix, Jackalope/HKP/dog, or even my extremely-limited but not outright banned/deleted JasonCarswell/EdmondDantes - plus all the asstrolls, various refugee communities, etc.

Odd that M7 never shared an email.

[-]LarrySwinger0(+1|-1)

Imo the problem wasn't transparency so much as overinvolvement. Let the community develop organically.

[-]JasonCarswell1(+1|0)

Yes.

I can't remember how many times I tried to rally folks together into some kind of oversight development committee to discuss and reach consensus on how to improve things. Most folks are just lazy, stupid, and/or don't care.

That's why we can't have nice things.

[-]newJiminy2(+2|0)

Imagine thinking that "let the community grow organically" means "oversight development committee".

That is the opposite.

Do you hate m7 just cuz he wouldn't let you have power Over saidit? You're way too emotional about a minor website.

[-]x0x72(+2|0)

I was noticing that. Also, "oversight development committee." I think the order might be off. Maybe development oversight committee. Unless its meant a committee to develop new oversights. How many oversights do you need?

I'm going to say I'm a +1 against organic. When you are hands-off about culture, you just get crap. The experiment has already been run and the outcome is accessible. Just go to voat. It sounds romantic to just let something fester and see where it goes. People automatically feel like it is a novel and rare thing. But it is tried and available. If you want good outcomes you have to apply human will. You have to choose good over bad. And you need your community to do the same. You need to foster a community that chooses good over bad and undstands that it matters. You can choose good over bad all you want but if you live in Haiti you aren't going to have a good time. Because you are surrounded by people not doing that. Advanced cultures are selective. In fact that's what it means to have a culture. Culture is what your socity selects over other things.

Does this mean being reddit and having arbitrary moderation? No. That's the lazy way to do it. It means reminding people that if you throw garbage into a bin and hang around it you will spend your time hanging around and working with garbage. If you want a nice experience you have to think ahead what kind of experience you are creating for yourself and others. It's like growing a garden. If you want a nice garden you must do some thinking. It's not a thoughtless exercise to have a nice environment.

So it's my job to encourage people to do that kind of thought. Shape your environment to be better or don't be shocked when it isn't great. Almost no software I can write can just magically solve that side of the equation. So the only way to solve it is culturally. So I am going to be hands on with trying to shape culture. And I really appreciate users who help me with that.

[-]JasonCarswell1(+1|0)

Imagine [...] That is the opposite.

@newJiminy

Actually, what M7 did was NOT "organic", did NOT stimulate growth, and did NOT involve the community. I was OPENLY trying to gather folks together to come up with new inclusive ways of doing things to benefit the community. He was CLEARLY incapable and overwhelmed (his own choice to carry the burden himself) and needed assistance and a better way.

Also, M7 censored. MANY times.

Do you hate m7 just cuz he wouldn't let you have power Over saidit?

If you paid attention to everything I've said and done, you'd know I've never wanted power. I've wanted everyone to share power and thrive - together cooperatively.

Why would I try to help someone else's project if I didn't see potential? In a do-ocracy you may 1) collaborate on someone's project, 2) bitch about their project, 3) do your own project in your own way, 4) shut the fuck up. I tried way more than most to improve SaidIt with all its faults. (I did the logo, fleshed out the wiki and documentation, I created many of the best subs (many tragically left off the default), I was active posting and interacting, had one of the highest karmas, and tried my best to elevate the discourse and awareness about critical issues and solutions.)

I'm pissed that he squandered the great potential of what SaidIt could have been because his poor management and ego got in the way of everything. He talked big but acted petty.

development oversight committee

That's it. I floundered for a way to say it.

Agreed about "organic". I wanted M7 to select a TrustedTeam™ (whether he included me or not) to be able to help steer the culture. Ideally there would have been some kind of community voting on it, but there'd also be vetoing (ie. socks and his alts and trolls should not be able to vote him in) as is any owner's right/duty. I'm happy to see so many of who I would certainly nominate to be TrustWorthy™ are now on GoatMatrix.

You need to foster a community that chooses good over bad and undstands that it matters.

Agreed. I don't know how M7 thought he could start yet another forum with a focus on a more elevated discourse without a plan, not to mention the way he ran SaidIt - often not reacting well, not-transparent, poorly communicating, and mostly absent for many years.

It's not a thoughtless exercise to have a nice environment.

True wisdom.

[-]x0x70(0|0)

What M7 did may not have been organic, but it worked. There is a reason why I targetted Saidit and said that Saidit had the closest thing to the userbase I want. If I was running this with Voat's userbase or Lemmy's userbase I'd already have given up. That would be a waste of time.

Maybe I'm a snob for wanting philosophy but users who's only content is "I said nigger pat me on the back." or people who just try to censor every argument they don't want to process is not my idea of intellegent people. I found that Saidit was pretty much the only place where users were able to talk about unconfortable topics while being nice people. Litterally the only place I could find on the internet like that.

The whole rest of the internet's communities fall into one of three corners of a triangle. Offensive for the sake of being offensive, and often intentionally moronic. Censorious narrow minded idiots. Or people interested in pure entertainment with no actual thoughts at all.

In theory I think there is a middle where people are actually balanced and thoughtful people. But you are always being pushed toward the corner where you are closest. We are closest to the "free speech means celebrating everyone being a retarded asshole" corner. Thankfully we aren't that close anymore. But it will take our effort to stay away from that corner. It's why I tried to make sure YogurtStains knew he wasn't actually welcome, becaue that's where we were headed. And that's what that crowd was being very militant that the site had to become. I've made progress pushing us away from that corner but it hasn't been zero effort. I succesfull got attrition from those guys and acording to metrics the site is still growing.

It's worth losing some growth to protect long term growth and grow in the right direction. That's why I don't want to be an asshole but I will keep being an asshole to the people who push in that direction. I don't have to seem cool to the wrong people. It's not my real personality, it's strategy. But it helps me out if others make a point of seeming lame to the wrong kind of people. Attrition bias is the best tool we have.

If someone wants a reward for being offensive that's the first sign to try to push them out. It's not that one offensive comment is the end of the world. It's that it's like sinking sand. You are headed in a direction and the work become harder to go in a different direction the deeper you go. Of course you can invite him to adopt a different culture first. But if they seem 100% disinterested then any good society should want to boot migrants that don't want to assimilate and think what they know is the only and right way to do things. The irony is these people think it's crazy that Muslims who move to Europe want to implement Sharia law, but they can't see migrant syndrome in themselves. "I moved to a place with a higher culture? Fuck that shit. Rob, steal, rape women." Of course it gets boring hearing about higher culture all day. But as long as there is a contest to get people to assimilate it its going to happen. So I encoursge people to adopt it then we can live it instead of talk about it.

Part of why I won't read huge comments is how they look on this message board getting all thin. Not sure if there's a way to change that.

[-]newJiminy0(0|0)

TLDR

Log off and go outside

[-]newJiminy1(+1|0)

TLDR but never censor

[-]JasonCarswell1(+1|0)

You really ought to read it.

[-]newJiminy0(0|0)

If you need to use AI to type out a book justifying censorship you're just trolling. There's no possible way to justify it. This same debates been had millions of times and the side of censorship always loses and resorts to insults. I'm not wasting my time once again.

[-]LarrySwinger1(+1|0)

Disappointed

FTFY.

[-]JasonCarswell1(+1|0)

Neat video, fancy costumes, sets, etc.
Not sure about the lighting (or the tune).
Could have been better with a Tarsem Singh treatment like REM's Losing My Religion.
