But! Chat is still up if you saved personalized "chat in new tab" URL (https://thelounge.saidit.net/?[lots of secret parameters, including nickname and obfuscated password]).
If anything that might be a good sign. It likely means a human has done something and may be doing more things to get it fixed. It also means the plug could have been fully pulled.
I wonder what would happen if someone shared their chat url. Of course the risk is someone could de-obfuscate that password. But there could be 20 of us with the same username.
Well, I'm in chat now with Zom :) Musky also logs in that way (he deleted Musky Saidit account, but it's the one with chat admin powers). Gravi also knows the trick, we used it in 2024 when Saidit was down for a few days.
The time when the Cloudflare page appeared was right around the time HN thread was posted, so I guess the outage broke something.
I think this is related to the server problem we discussed earlier. Cloudflare is fine, and shows no errors connecting to the server, and instead notes that the error is at the 'host'. Ergo: whatever caused problems with the databases seems to have crashed properly, while one of the databases - which manages the chat - is still up. If I remember correctly, m7 paid the annual domain fee earlier this year, so I doubt that's the problem.
If one of the databases crashed and it didn't take down the site I don't think it can crash more. I believe it uses both Cassandra and MariaDB/MySQL. I had done a setup of it once. I agree it is unlikely cloudflare going down had anything to do with it. If it did it was more likely via human impact. A cloudfare error (even if not theirs) could have triggered some action for better or worse.
The fact the chat is still up is a good sign because it means their decided task wasn't to shut down all operations.
Chat is an IRC plugin The Lounge on a subdomain thelounge.saidit.net (probably lives on different server), from what I understand it communicates with actual Saidit just via URL parameters.

Saidit goes down December 1st, I'm guessing he paid monthly and it was automatically deducted from his bank account but his card expired and he hasn't updated it.
It looks like I was able to get in from an old url in my history. I always thought those parameters were encoding some kind of temporary access token.
