I coulda seen how it might be self defense, but he didn't testify? Great lawyer.

It's unusual to testify in a murder trial. But I see what you are getting at with the self defense. Ideally we'd have a perfectly "keep your hands to yourself" society. When someone violates that how far can you escalate? If it's not absolute then we're stuck with a very subjective law.

I think because usually lawyers give bad advice and most accused people are guilty. But say someone is innocent. He's got 5th amendment right. It's just if I'm innocent and accused of murder I'd want to tell my side. I was ready to believe it was self defense.

It's reasonable to want to tell your side. But it tends to not work out. Your lawyer is your voice and is going to try to tell your side in the closing argument. And if he's any good he'll be pretty charasmatic. Best part is, anything he says can't be used as evidence against you. So if you want to sow a narrative, even an honest one, without handing the other side something they can manipulate (even if wrong), might as well let your lawyer do it.

I know a little about lawyers, the problem is they're often lazy, don't give af, will charge you retainer then do nothing etc. I think most people don't realize this and wrongly trust lawyers. Common sense would tell me you gotta testify on your behalf. Cuz yeah you have the fifth amendment right to stay silent but using that right makes you look guilty as hell.
