The villification of rms has CIA written all over it. They even vandalized his website and linked to him eating from his toe in the footer. People have got to have been paid off for that.
Every individual is weird if you analyze them enough. Stallman has unique ideas, some good, some may not be - and may be related to his "think different" ability. As an influencer he lives under a microscope, so people notice. Apparently he's eaten with his feet more than once. Different cultures have different views of feet and sanitation. I both admire and am repulsed at his no-fucks-given.
The establishment has milked kind and generous humanity for their "free" efforts, in social media (fuck zuck and magnora7), Wikipedia, FLOSS, and now A.I. Not that they may be done with us they need to destroy all the good things to reclaim their dominance and hegemony.
At this point in this community's size, it would make sense to make a chronological "comments" thread so we could all see all the comments as they role in, late or not. With growth it would become overwhelming.
Someone voted this post down, for some reason. I don't like the topic much but think it should be known about, as with most things I post, thus my motivation. If you voted this down Larry, then you've voted down your own comments and reasonings here - leaving the other 4 subs higher. This is another reason why I'm not a fan of separate posts rather than one post with several metatags/subs. Further on the votes, it might be nice to sort for up/down/sum/ratio and high-to-low or low-to-high.
Also missing is some kind of search - I'd like to search for content, and be able to search back in my own comments. I can only go through the history of my posts, limited page by page.
I do want to get search in. There is a good bit of space at the top for it. Comment sorting is also necessary for those long term threads I wanted to make a thing. At the time I don't think there is any algo. It's just how it comes out of the DB.
Set up and use a decentralized search engine (or several). You, @LarrySwinger, and I could each host one (or some), network them together, and be searching/crawling content that might otherwise never be found or seen. Archiving would be good too.
I know despite default capitals-starting articles (with lowercase auto-redirects), it's possible to use lowercase but it might require an extension - and/or may be triggered in site-wide settings like on Wiktionary where the focus is not on use in paragraphs.
I wouldn't mind back it all up. In fact, maybe I shouldn't reset my password that way but I should back up the database anyway since you mentioned it and you should have a backup. Imagine if you lost all of that work over some tiny error.
d3rr and I always talked about establishing regular backups as Zip files that anyone can download. I assume you'd want the main content without secure info (passwords, user passwords and preferences, and private group projects when we get around to utilizing those privilege features). He mentions it every time we chat but hasn't made it happen yet.
I don't know if Robin of WikiSpooks added it or it was in place before he took over, but they have downloadable Zips (Wikispooks: "Site Backup" is even listed in the left-margin, something I need to learn how to edit). I don't know if they have an automatic script that runs and/or adds it to the wiki-page or if any part is manually done. It's been a long time, and I always meant to have Robin as co-admin on these sites - so perhaps I should reach out sooner than later.
It would be great to have a wiki-page documenting the process, the contents, and how it could be restored if ever anything happened to our sites (like on WikiSpooks) or if anyone wanted to utilize the info or even fork their own way - unlike SaidIt.
Feel free to set up backups and redundant archived downloads available on the two Cassy Servers for LeverMind, Gvid projects, and RabbitHole if @LarrySwinger wishes - and if drivespace and bandwidth permit. If for some reason(s) you want to privately store stuff that is not publicly linked, aggregate it all under one folder and let me know about it to avoid resource management mishaps. Not sure how vast your videos are, and if/when we get Chew.Tube and Volun.Tube running Invidious and PeerTube and/or VPNs using bandwidth, we may need to assess and prepare our resources accordingly.
I don't want to assume or impose but if you're up for it, I could start developing a Gvid.TV project on Projex to document and organize everyone's thoughts and such - much like I did by starting the underutilized https://SaidIt.net/s/SaidIt/wiki (view the history).
Do you have the old databases for the Rabbit Hole instance that ran as a hidden service? I simply started over when I hosted it on clearnet so there is no need to regularly backup that database, it is not being used right now, but I would be interested in a copy of it.
Another thing to look into is MediaMonkey, which is somewhat friendlier than PeerTube in the sense that it doesn't require javascript, there are still plenty of people who block it. But then PeerTube is federated from what I understand. Invidious is only a jewtube client and doesn't allow video uploads, right?
Now as then, you'd have to chat-walk me through the steps to troubleshoot it to find what's wrong with the You-Cassandra communications. I didn't do anything. Nothing seemed wrong. And I have no clue.
Two potential problems now are that I don't live on that old network, and a lot of time has passes so maybe updates are required.
Now that I have more my brains back after 4.5 years on "anti"-depressants, a decade of recovery plus a few years of COVID nonsense, I'm rejoining the work force part-time and resisting tyranny the rest of my time. To my point, I can buy a better box, set it up to be a mostly offline backup server with a faraday trunk with all the hard drives or something. Before configuring that new box into a Gimp within the trunk to be released monthly for backups, we could first get you your stuff from the Cassandra drives, see if there's anything else worth saving, and determine if the box is of any use to anyone, whether as a server or a gift to Winton's grandkids.
Also want to get a 16 or 24 drive rack for my archive of drives, maybe two. But that ain't cheep. And I'd need a plan for serving and covertly sharing them. Also I'd need a new residence and a stable income to afford all of the above, and more. One of these days I'm going to get my drivers license renewed, then eventually get a car, then drive to work instead of waste so much time with busses. Priorities and lack of infinite time.
Federated PeerTube is my preference for a social video platform until convinced otherwise. d3rr sometimes helps them when they hit rough patches.
Yes, Invidious seems to be a sort of VPN alternative for viewing, little more.
Now as then, you'd have to chat-walk me through the steps to troubleshoot it to find what's wrong with the You-Cassandra communications. I didn't do anything. Nothing seemed wrong. And I have no clue.
It won't run because the port needs to be forwarded again. But that issue doesn't play anymore because the whole instance was redundant now that I have https://rabbithole.wf up and running. Or are you willing to host it again? I would in fact migrate to your server if you're willing to offer that again. The port needs to be forwarded again and then we can troubleshoot the issue with SSH if it still exists. Updates won't be a problem either.
I'm rejoining the work force part-time and resisting tyranny the rest of my time
Same. What are you going to do? And did you get value for roofing?
IIRC, it was more than just the port forwarding to RH. You said you were simply not able to connect and/or login to Cassandra to maintain it and RH.
A few weeks ago you said you had a good free setup when I offered. Have things changed? What are the advantages for one over the other? I suggested a third VPS for you and RH, and other Cassy projects.
The old Cassandra box is at the Media Centre but I could get it home here, but on wifi without the CAT5. It's old but it was enough then to animate the Zigby TV series and other projects at Digital Domain over 15 years ago, in the slimmer early years of infinite bloat.
Value? Meh. I helped another freedom guy with his business. Tax free benefitted both of us. I whored my time for a bit of financial freedom. It makes me urgently and fully aware that I must make my "hobbies" and "interests" into sustainable lucrative incomes.
This winter I'll be renovating Don's gutted house if he can get his shit together. I won't be spending it before I get it. Good never comes from debt.
Importantly that physical labour is good for my health (closer to my goal weight) though it does make me sore, eat too many pain killers, and drains my capacity to think in the evenings. Gotta order some kratom before I forget.
I'm lining up some Santa gigs and I've got to finish drafting some Santa Libertas scripts to shoot.
And this winter I'm overwhelmed with ambitious WEFreedom projects, typical wiki additions, and aim to finish making the LeverMind founding documents presentable enough and to spend a week or few this winter focusing on learning the HumHub platform's in's and out's (and wiki addons and permissions).
IIRC, it was more than just the port forwarding to RH. You said you were simply not able to connect and/or login to Cassandra to maintain it and RH.
That's right, I wasn't able to connect via SSH, that also needs troubleshooting if it happens again. But who knows maybe it'll work now. Maybe port 22 was blocked on the other setup but not here.
A few weeks ago you said you had a good free setup when I offered. Have things changed? What are the advantages for one over the other? I suggested a third VPS for you and RH, and other Cassy projects.
I still don't have the VPS. The advantage is that it's a professional VPS free of charge, that's why I declined your offer, to save you money. But I'm interested in the Cassandra server (or whatever it's called) because of how little it costs to keep that running. It's kind of iffy whether or not I'll get the free VPS. I'm offered it but lately I noticed they feel slightly uncomfortable about it and it felt like it was too much trouble for them. That's another reason for my interest in Cassandra-server.
The old Cassandra box is at the Media Centre but I could get it home here, but on wifi without the CAT5. It's old but it was enough then to animate the Zigby TV series and other projects at Digital Domain over 15 years ago, in the slimmer early years of infinite bloat.
Hardware-wise it seems good enough, PhpBB doesn't require a lot of resources, but running a server on wifi is not good. Isn't it possible to connect it via ethernet?
We didn't do a few roofs this fall (but will in the spring), so I guess it's okay to have a bit more elbow room, but it's not much. A little over $100 Canadian every 3 months for a VPS, plus domains. More important is the value and potential of our services. February would be the next best window for me to set that up. I have a pragmatic payment schedule for hosting and domains that is doable and keeps me balanced.
Without knowing more, my recommendations with them would be obvious: don't burn any bridges, be as open, clear, and transparent as possible upfront (don't creep your goals), and offer to give them logs, terms, outlines, and/or anything else they might ask for.
Cassandra might end up just being a good backup for us, much bigger than whatever hosting may offer. And if/when necessary, and I can afford one, I can attach a big NAS or two, with or without vaults of archived content. A car, steady income, and sustainable independent place should probably come first though.
The wifi here is adequate for me, and I should be able to plant Cassandra by the modem temporarily, maybe long-term, but it's not in my room - and I wouldn't feel right having something like a Tor site or portal or anything like that here. Other folks live here. If it was just me, no prob. Soon enough I'll get a place.
But if you're just fetching the database why would you even need to run the phpBB? What are your plans in an ideal scenario?
A car, steady income, and sustainable independent place should probably come first though.
Right, I didn't realize you're still moving. It isn't interesting then at this point because there will be an interruption each time you move.
Okay, so I'm giving it a bit more time to feel it out with the other person, and if they insist it isn't a problem I'll take it. Right now I'm more inclined to get my own VPS.
I wouldn't feel right having something like a Tor site or portal or anything like that here. Other folks live here. If it was just me, no prob. Soon enough I'll get a place.
There's nothing wrong with hosting a hidden service because it's just as legal as when you're hosting it on clearnet. Nobody will trace the website back to you so that isn't where the problem stems from. The ISP can analyze your traffic and determine that you're using Tor, but then they have no clue what you're doing on there, whether you just browse or host a service, anything. Tor use itself is no ground to deny someone service AFAIK.
That being said, I'm not asking you to host a hidden service again. Here's the situation. When you had time to reply on RH a little while ago the website was down temporarily. That happens once every month. The spambots can't post anymore but they still access the site, and because it's a free hosting service, the resources are very limited so basically they're bringing the website down through bot traffic. That's why I need better hosting. Your connection should be able to take the traffic, it isn't a whole lot, it's just the free plan has terrible caps. I'm thinking you'd probably feel uncomfortable with bots connecting to your home internet. Oh well whatever. Yeah, we can reserve Cassandra for backups and things like that if bot traffic makes you feel uneasy.

Rms is the anti-influencer.

In looking up the good search engines I got distracted and updated the Cassandra Team page (and made it easier to link to sub-sections). https://Projex.Wiki/wiki/Cassandra_Team#Search_engine_platforms
Also, x0x7, I don't recall if I registered your Projex user "X0x7" with an email or not (https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Reset_password). There are other options (https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Resetting_passwords), but I don't recommend massing with the database, especially without backing it all up. If in there, it might be possible to change to a lowercase first letter.
I know despite default capitals-starting articles (with lowercase auto-redirects), it's possible to use lowercase but it might require an extension - and/or may be triggered in site-wide settings like on Wiktionary where the focus is not on use in paragraphs.

We should 100% back it up regardless.
