I have a hot ;) water heater that takes a female 1/2" propane fitting. There is a 1/2 male threaded fitting sticking out. I'm trying to connect it to a 20lbs propane cylinder, I need a regulator between the two. Can't find anything that works at lowes & I don't want to spend $50 on a miss with Amazon

I don't know anything about this. If you follow my advice you are probably going to blow up.
Have you tried duct taping it?

Thanks, I didn't realize just how long I've been bothering with this. As long as I don't need a regulator.. and I know I do.. I've got propane to the water heater. Now I just need to get water to the water heater.
