Seriously, has the recent files list ever worked for any of you guys? For me it shows a bunch of random files, not the ones I've accessed most recently. I need to navigate manually every time. And why is there only a recent files list in the file picker but not in regular file manager windows?

Are you talking about in a graphical system like Nautilus or Thunar? I've noticed inconsistency on Linux and Windows with that. I don't know why inconsistency is so common with different dialogs opened from different applications where you have to click the recently modified column header twice to reset it some times.

I've seen sometimes when I open a file within the browser that it first does sort properly, and a half second later it goes into some other mode. I suspect applications sometimes send a sort hint to the file browser when it really shouldn't be doing that.

Yeah that's what I mean. Like usually, only macOS does it right: Finder's recent files list works like a charm.

I'm talking about a global recent files list. I was mainly focused on the GUI for the purpose of this post although a CLI utility that does it would also be welcome.
