Based on your recommendations i went with NameCheap.com and will use Lets Encrypt for the SSL and after the 60 days may transfer to njal.la - I'm now at the point where i need to find a hosting solution. Self hosting is an option but i dont know if my ISP allows me to do that with my current connection and I also dont want to have my personal work machine hosting it while i dev on it. Security is also a concern because this machine is running a perfectly legal copy of windows 10. So what recommendations do you guys have on hosting? BTW, i now own roll4d4.com! cost me $6.18! So cool!

Kewl domain name.

For hosting it depends on what you need. Based on the domain name I'm guessing it isn't controversial. I was looking at Slicehosting which provides a VPS with 16 GB RAM for $6 / month. That sounds too good to be true so maybe try it for a month to see if it's a scam or not. I'm very interested in your feedback on them if you go that route. Also I read a tip on faggit about Oracle Cloud Free Tier. Apparently they provide an endless trial for a VPS with 24 GB RAM.

Are you comfortable in the GNU/Linux cli? If not, you may want to get a shared cpanel host like Dreamhost.

  • I'm not yet comfortable with the GNU/Linux CLI, but I’m using this project to teach myself Ruby on Rails and other skills related to web deployment. The site will likely host my products and possibly a community forum for customers and gamers. I understand it might get a bit complex as I explore ideas like custom transitions and responsive layouts, but I’m excited about the challenge.
  • cheap is good, as i am poor. i will check out Oracle Cloud Free Tier unless someone has another recommendation.
